However, a few moments before my daughter left, her precious oldest, Johnna, who also has a fondness for David's cookies, asked if she could take some with her. I got her a baggie and she loaded up with six of them. Then someone else got some and the next thing I knew, there were no cookies left.
I told myself it was just as well because I really didn't need more encouragement to eat sweets but then I noticed something as I was cleaning the kitchen after everyone was gone. On one of my grandchildren's little plates, there was a piece of cookie--not a whole one--but a nice bite and I determined that I was going to eat that bite and be satisfied. I actually looked forward to it.
Unbeknownst to me though, my husband Jim (who also has a fondness for David's no-bake cookies) saw the piece of little cookie left and decided to enjoy it for himself. Not knowing my thoughts and plans, while I was flittering (yes, I can still flitter) about the house cleaning up, he gorged himself on the piece of cookie I had been unwise enough not to stake a verbal claim to. He even mentioned it to me that he ate it before I had the chance to notice that it was missing. So, it seemed to me as if fate itself was denying me the right to my brother's cookies and I should resign myself to doing without to avoid further disappointment.
A day later, I shared with David and Carol, what had happened about the cookies and we all laughed about it but David told me he was going to rectify the situation by making some cookies just for me!
Of course I told him he didn't have to do that but of course I was glad that he didn't seem to listen.
Then, the next week, I got a call from my brother. "I got your cookies made," he told me and since I was planning to be in town the next day, I agreed to stop and pick them up.
So, yesterday, I picked up the cookies. I have already had three of them and they are delicious.
But even though I love those cookies, what pleases me most about them is that my brother made them for me. No matter what happened yesterday or what happens tomorrow, I will always know that my brother cared enough about me to spend time making a batch of cookies...just for me.
And after giving God priority and obedience, isn't that what life is all about--how you show others that you love them and that they are important to you?
The rest is just fluff.
And that's the view from this catbird seat
